Community Care Pastor

Purpose: To lead McIvor church in a care and discipleship ministry that is holistic, proactive and responsive to immediate and long-term needs of the community. To encourage Christ-centred discipleship as a way of life, and promote mission and service as an expression of our community's character.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Caregiving: Together with the Caregivers Committee lead, develop and coordinate the care-giving and visitation ministry of the McIvor church. Recruit, develop and train volunteers in the formation of a larger care ministry team. Attention will be given to address the care needs of the full demographic of the congregation.

  2. Life Groups: Oversee and provide direction for McIvor's Life Groups, which is our primary vehicle of care ministry. Develop McIvor-specific resources related to the development of spiritual disciplines and mutual care. Resource Life Group leaders to equip people to serve God and others.

  3. Family Nurture: Promote and facilitate shared, intergenerational opportunities for learning and Christian discipleship. Lead the congregation in adult Christian formation practices that invite people to become devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

  4. Bereavement Care: Serve as the primary responder to those who are preparing for end of life, who are dying and/or families who have experienced various life-losses. This will include officiating funerals, providing or arranging for grief counseling and facilitating after-funeral care.


Ministry Activities:

  • Develop and articulate a clear vision for this ministry.

  • Research, produce and/or purchase resources that contribute to this ministry.

  • Facilitate special events (i.e. training, appreciation, etc.)

  • Work together with staff and volunteers in developing and implementing complementary (intergenerational) activities to our current "family based ministries."

  • Provide the point of contact for McIvor's women's and men's ministries.

  • Member of the McIvor teaching and preaching team.

  • Oversee and evaluate this ministry.


Peer Team Activities:

  • A member of the McIvor staff team. Participate in staff team meetings and activities to promote and support McIvor's mission and ministries.

  • Work with all staff to promote and encourage team building and mentoring relationships in raising up a new generation of leaders.


Key Relationships:

  • The Community Care Pastor shall be responsible to the Church through the Church Council (Executive), and the Human Resources Committee.

  • A member of the Pastoral Advisory Committee shall relate to the Community Care Pastor, serving as a support, resource and advocate in their ministry.

  • Participate on the McIvor church council.

  • Member of the McIvor Caregivers committee.


Personal/Self-Care: Model and pursue healthy self-care through the consistent practice of Christian disciplines.


Qualifications:

  • Character:

    • Passion for Christ, His kingdom, His church, His people and those without Jesus

    • Servant leadership

    • Spiritual maturity

    • Team player

    • Teachable/learner

  • Spiritual Gifts:

    • Pastoral care (shepherding)

    • Discipleship training/mentoring

    • Teaching & preaching

    • Administration

  • Pastoral call: able to verbalize a God-given calling to vocational Christian ministry and articulate a theology/philosophy of ministry that shapes their pastoral engagement.

  • Education: Theological Education (masters degree preferred).

  • Experience: demonstrated effectiveness in care ministries, team and leadership practices.

  • Church membership: able and willing, together with his/her spouse (if applicable), to become a member of the McIvor Avenue M.B. Church, and to support its mission and vision for ministry.

  • Credentialing: must be ordained or credentialed (or be eligible) by the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. A minister credentialed in another denomination shall complete Mennonite Brethren credentialing requirements within the first year of ministry at McIvor Church.
