Good is the enemy of great. That is the contention of Jim Collins – author of a book entitled Good to Great. It’s a book primarily written for businesses, but I believe it also has much that it can offer the church. When we know our calling we are to pursue it relentlessly. Scripture encourages us, time and again, to strive for excellence. The rich young ruler in Matthew 19 was seemingly good but Jesus told him how to strive for perfection. Jesus also instructs us, in Matthew 5, to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect. Simply good is not good enough and it is not what we are encouraged to shoot for.
To be great takes effort. The cumulative effect of consistent effort in the same direction over time creates momentum. As a church we ought not to change our approach or our calling over and over again. We need to recognize our God-given lane and then consistently push on the accelerator. The fantastic news is that, as a church, we don’t need to come up with the plan or the vision on our own. God, by His Holy Spirit, will give us the vision we need to have and will provide us with the plans that we need to implement. Thus, our job will be to take those Holy Spirit-given plans and vision and get to work. Push in the same direction – ALL of us!
What we need to find is unity of purpose and unity of direction. We can’t all be pushing and pulling in different directions. We, as a church, need to display the type of character that will have us all working together toward the same goal of making disciples.
